Fall Prevention Programs Are Not As Successful As Desired
Research Problem/Purpose This articleââ¬â¢s main research problem was that most fall prevention programs depicted in hospitals were not as successful as desired. Despite implementation of the programs, hospitals still had a high rate of falls and/or injuries related to falls within their units. The purpose of this particular study was to solve this problem and examine the contribution of the response time to a patientââ¬â¢s call light and the fall related injuries in adult, in-patient facilities. Variables/Hypothesis/Questions/Assumptions Within this research, there were many constructs and variables to be addressed. The covariates/controls were the hospital type, total nursing hours per patient, the percentage of registered nurses (RNs) working those hours, average case mix index, percentage of patients 65 years or older, percentage of altered mental status patients, percentage of patients with hearing problems and the call light usage rate per day. This research had one independent and two dependent variables. The independent variable had to do with the average response time to the call lights. The dependents were the fall rate and the injury-related fall rate. The operational definitions for both dependent variables were (number of total falls x1000/total patient-days) and (number of injury x 1000/ total patient-days). Patient-days refers to how many patients were dealt with per day.
